Erv was born Sept. 29, 1920, to Hans and Anna Oye, in Clarkston, where his family had a small fruit farm. He was a baby when his family moved to Mica, Wash., and bought a farm. He went through the eighth grade at Mica and then started ninth grade at Valley Ford (Wash.) High School, but had to quit to work on the family farm.
On April 26, 1941, he married Lois M. Stratton and moved to California, where he worked at Niland Naval Base, among other jobs. They later moved back to Spokane, where he worked for the magnesium plant for the war effort. He then went to work for Trentwood Rolling Mill until after World War II was over. They moved in 1947 to Lewiston, where Dad worked for his uncle for a year before going to work at PFI in 1948, starting on the sawmill side and then moving to the pulp and paper side, where he worked until retirement in January 1983.
Dad loved spending time with his family camping, fishing, boating and traveling together. He enjoyed carpentry and fixing anything. He built the house they lived in, made five sets of build-ins for family members, an Awana trophy case for Orchards Community Church and numerous other items. He was the happiest when he was in his shop building something for someone.
