" A few days before we were married, (this was during World War II), we didn't own a car, so my girlfriend, Burke and I planned to take a Greyhound Bus from Denver to Burlington, CO, so we could be married near my Mother and brother, Clifford. I was born in Burlington and was the only girl with 5 brothers in the family. My Mother wanted to be at our wedding. That evening my girlfriend got on the bus and Burke (Francis Burke Locklin 1914-1990) and I didn't because so many soldiers and families were getting on.Traveling was very hard during those times. My girlfriend got off the bus to wait with us.The next day we did get on the bus. When we got to Burlington, it was raining very, very hard.My Mother and brother were not there to meet us, we stayed in a hotel that night and the next day they came to town, 19 miles and took us out to the farm. The next day, June 8, 1944, we were married at 4:00 PM, at the Burlington Methodist Parsonage, with my girlfriend, Margaret Brunemier, and my brother, Cliffor Walters, as witnesses, my Mother was present. That evening, we went to a cafe for our wedding supper, as we were to board a bus around 6:00 PM for our trip back to Denver. Margaret had informed the bus load we were newlyweds. As we boarded the bus, there was so much rice thrown at us - it seemed like hail stones. When we got to Denver around midnight, Margaret (who is now my sister-in-law) went home.Burke and I found a hotel - we were ready for a rest." Delores M.
