ARNOLD

In 1900 Rooks County, Kansas, Arnold is with Augustus S. 46 and Rachel 30. He was born March 1887 in Kansas. Siblings are Charles L. 11, Edith M. 9, Bertha M. 7, Walter 3, and Owen 1.

"Arnold was the oldest son of Arnold Augustus and Rachel(Rogers)Elder. He married Susan Francis Kinion on April 12,1910. Arnold was a farmer. He homesteaded in Kit Carson Co., on 15 May 1910.

He returned to Kansas in 1925, living there until 1943 when he moved to Nebraska; he lived there until 1951, and then returned to Kansas until his death. Nine Children were born to this union.(Two died in infancy.) Boy Elder, Dorothy Edith, Willard Arnold, Keith Charles, Vera Francis, Lowell Lee, Vinta Rachell, Richard Dwayne, Orin William. "

Vera Frances Holthusen, 89, of Cheyenne died Aug. 16 at Cheyenne Health Care Center.
Mrs. Holthusen was born March 4, 1917, in Burlington, Colo, daughter of Arnold F. and Susan (Kinion) Elder.
She graduated from Woodston High School in Woodston, Kan., in 1938.
Mrs. Holthusen married Kenneth W. Holthusen on Nov. 4, 1939, in Cheyenne.
She was a certified nurses assistant at Memorial Hospital, Eventide and DePaul Hospital.
Mrs. Holthusen was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Cheyenne Jackalopes, Eagles, Moose, VFW Post 1881 and American Legion Post 6. She is survived by four daughters, Florence Frances Bradley of Torrington, Ella Marie Cross of Casper, and Sharon Cloyd and Mareon Stolp, both of Cheyenne; a son, William Holthusen of Cheyenne; a brother, Orin Elder of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Vinta Butler of Phillipsburg, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
Mrs. Holthusen was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Holthusen on Oct. 18, 1973; her parents, Arnold F. and Susan F. Elder; three brothers, Willard, Keith and Lowell Elder; a grandson; two infant brothers; and an infant sister.

Vinta "Babe" (Elder) Butler 1915-2010 is buried in Woodston # 82985973.

Lowell Lee Elder 1918-1981 is buried in Woodston # 6156509 "Lowell was the son of Arnold Franklin Elder & Susan Frances Kinion. He married Evelyn May Bayless in October 1939 & they had 1 daughter. He married Amy Virginia Carter Sander in 1946 & they had 1 daughter. He married Chrystine Hannen Cunningham in July 1954. He married Fern Peugh Smith in 1973. Lowell was a farmer & cattleman. "

Keith Charles Leder 1915-1997 is buried in Salina, Kansas # 33087922 "Keith Charles Elder was the 3rd son and 5th child of Arnold Franklin and Susan Frances (Kinion) Elder. He was raised in Kansas and attended Woodston High School graduating in 1935 where he played defensive end and running back. He graduated from Fort Hays State College which he attended on a football scholarship in 1938. He played professional football for the St. Louis Gunners one season 1938 and returned to Kansas where he taught school and coached at Burr Oak, Belville and Manhattan before coming to Salina and teaching for 32 years. He was inducted into the Kansas High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Fort Hays State College Hall of Fame in 1989. He was married to Francis Laverne Bender 9 April 1939 and they had 6 children. He was well liked by all who knew him and respected by the boys he coached through the years. "

Willard Arnold Elder 1913-2004 is buried in Smith Center, Kansas. "Willard Arnold Elder, 90, Smith Center, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at his daughter's home in Hays, Kan. He was born in Burlington, Colo., on Nov. 18, 1913, to Arnold and Susan (Kinion) Elder. He received his B.S. in education from Fort Hays State University, Hays, in 1940; later earned his master's from FHSU; and taught and coached in many communities in north central Kansas. He served in World War II in the U.S. Pacific Fleet. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church in Smith Center, American Legion Post No. 220, Smith Center Masonic Lodge, Smith County Retired Teacher's Association and was past president of the State of Kansas NEA. He married Linnie Doris (Kirkman), Sept. 8, 1940, in Hays. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter; and brothers, Lowell, Kirwin, Kan.; and Keith, Salina, Kan. He is survived by his brother, Orin, Halstead, Kan.; his sisters, Vera Holthouson, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Vinta "Babe"Butler, Woodston, Kan.; his children, Harry Elder, and wife, Patricia; and Donna Wood, and husband, Jim, St. Joseph; and Barbara Smith, and husband, Maynard, Hays; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Smith Center United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Willard A. and Linnie Doris Elder Memorial Scholarship Fund at Smith Center High School. "

Charles W. Elder proved up a quarter in 2, 11S 44W in 1913.

Charles 1979-1954 is buried in Marshall County, Kansas # 98760550. "Charles Wesley Elder, passed away suddenly on Sunday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Clifford Overbaugh. He was the son of Rebecca and George Elder born on November 27, 1879 on a farm near Almena, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. He passed away on March 21, 1954 and attained the age of 74 years, 3 months and 22 days.

On April 25 1906 in Beaver City, Nebraska, Mr. Elder was united in marriage to Grace Williams of Stamford, Nebraska . They lived on a farm for two years near Beaver City, the couple moved to Burlington, Colorado where they homesteaded and lived for ten years. While in Colorado two children were born Lois and Merlin.

Then came to Kansas in 1919 and located on the present home farm in Center Township of Marshall County. He was a devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his wife,Grace; his daughter Lois Overbaugh, Frankfort, Kansas and son Merlin Elder, Blue Rapids, Kansas;four sisters Mrs. Maude Foss, Beaver City,Nebraska, Mrs. Mae Hopper, Alhambra, California, Mrs. Rhoda Cook, Glendale, Arizona, Mrs. Elizabeth Cox, Fort Collins, Colorado; three brothers, Dave Elder, Denver, Colorado, Guy Elder, Grangeville, Idaho, Frank Elder, Kennewick, Washington; and a grandson; and several nieces and nephews and many friends. "

"Funeral services were held for Grace Williams Elder at the United Methodist Church in Frankfort, Kansas on December 15, 1968 with Reverend Ronald Bumstead officiating.

Grace Williams Elder, daughter of John C and Kate Williams was born March 8, 1888 in Furnas County, Nebraska near Stamford. She passed away December 12, 1968 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Clifford Overbach at Frankfort, Kansas, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 4 days.

On April 25, 1906, at Beaver City, Nebraska She was united in marriage to Charles Wesley Elder of Almena, Kansas residing on a farm for two years near Beaver City, the couple moved to Burlington, Colorado where they homesteaded and lived ten years. While in Colorado, two children, Lois and Merlin were born to bless their happy home.

In 1919 the family moved to Marysville, Kansas, located in Center township maintain- ing there home there until Mr. Elder’s death in 1954. Since that time Mrs. Elder has lived in Frankfort, Kansas with her daughter, Lois and son-in-law Clifford.

Grace, a member of the United Methodist Church in Frankfort, accepted Christ as her personal Savior early in life.

She is survived by one daughter Lois Overbach, Frankfort, Kansas; one son, Merlin Elder, Topeka, Kansas, one grandson and one great-grandson; four brothers, Gilbert and Mearl Williams, Stamford, Nebraska, Joe Williams, Fort Collins, Colorado, Ervin Williams, Springville, Utah; a number of cousins and nieces and nephews."
