In 1880 Phillips County, Kansas, Moses Gaines is 38, Sarah E. 35, Samuel 14, Mary 8, Aaron 4, and Cory A. 1.
Sarah's widowed mother Grace Blankenship, 53, is with them.
In 1900 Phillips County, Kansas, Aaron born March 1876 in Illinois, married 3 years to Martha M. Jan 1871 Ohio. She's had four children all living. Crawford W. Brewer May 1890, Ethel P. Feb 1893, Viola E. Gaines Junean 1898 Kansas, and Arizone Sep 1899 Kansas.
1923 "The Kirwin Kansan, Kirwin, Kansas, Nov. 21, 1923 Moses Gaines was born April 7, 1841 in the State of Ohio, and departed this life at the home of his son, Aaron Gaines, near Kirwin on Nov. 17, 1923 at the age of 82 years 7 months and 10 days. ..He was united in matrimony to Sarah E. Blankenship October 28, 1863. To this union were born eight children, five boys and three girls. Those left to mourn his departure are Samuel of Burton, Oregon, Aaron of Kirwin, Ira of Yuma, Colorado, George of Speed and Mrs. Mary Bivens of Swan, Iowa. There are also twenty-six grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one aged sister, Mrs. Briggs Martin of Gretna and other relatives and friends. His wife and three children have preceded him in death."

Aaron cash-claimed a quarter in 21, 6 South, 43W in 1909.
Charles Kreoger proved up a quarter in 21, 6S 43W in 1913, and another in section 28 in 1914.

1912 Burlington "Marion Peugh and Charles Kreoger, of Morris, made final proof on their homesteads last Saturday."
Mary A. Kreoger cash-claimed a quarter in 19 in 1910.

Ethel Pearl Brewer married Charles Kreoger Oct 7, 1908 in Goff, Kit Carson County.
Ethel # 89580826 1891-1967 is buried in Burlington, with Charles 1881-1967.


" Helena Wisehart was born in Phillips County, Kansas, on December 17, 1886, and departed this life at the home of her parents July 7, 1915, at the age of 28 years 6 months and 20 days.. She was married to James Ira Gaines on December 19, 1904. To this union three children were born, two boys and one girl. "
The daughter, Freida F. Gaines, lived with relatives in Kansas, and Effie Gaines' obituary mentions "adopted daughter, Mrs. Fredia Norton of Norton, Kansas."
Freda F. Norton - Jan 23, 1909-Aug 29, 1988 is buried in Phillips County, Kansas # 142717343.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Ira Gaines, 39, born in Kansas, widowed, is a laborer on the roads, and Lillie McKee widowed Missouri is a servant. The Chares Power family is lodging with hi.
In 1930 Sterling, Colorado Ira is a farm laborer, with Lily M. both 52.

Ira 1882-1964 and Lillie M. McKee Gaines 1879-1965 are buried in Sterling. Ira's son Oren is in Sterling in 1930, doing odd jobs, married to Louise E. , both 22, with Ira L. seven months.
Oren 1908-1968 and Louise F. (Harr) Gaines 1908-1996 are buried in Sterling, as is Ira L "Junior" 1929-1999.
Ira's son Floyd Gaines is in Yuma, Colorado in 1930, living on Albany Street, a garage mechanic, 24, born in Kansas, married to Stella 20 Colorado. They have Betty D. 1 and Ellene one month, both born in Colorado.
The Gaines family in Yuma wrote that Ira's second wife didn't want Floyd to stay with them.
Floyd Gaines married Stella "Harmen" August 25, 1927, recorded in Yuma.
Floyd and Stella are farming in Washington County in 1940, with Betty 11, Eldene 10, Valeda 8, Phyllis 6, and Lonita 4.
Floyd and Stella are in Denver in 1945, living at 4355 Elizabeth.
They're buried in Yuma - Floyd 1905-1970, Stella 1910-1995.
Betty Darlene Buckley-Burdette Buckley-Burdette, Betty Darlene, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 1, 2009. She was born May 28, 1928 in Yuma, Colo. and was raised in Denver. She was a Kansas resident from the early 1950's to 1987. In the early 1960's she opened her own Wichita real estate business, Allied Realty, which she operated for 25 years. Preceded in death by mother, Stella Gaines; father, Hap Gaines; sisters, Eldene Smith, Jeanie Brant, LaVeda Burton. Survivors: husband, Joe Burdette of Oklahoma City; daughters, Lani McGrew of Norman, Okla., Kelley Kingman of Victorville, Calif., Kim Neary of Wichita, Paula Burdette of Fairfax, Va., Marlene Parra of Reno, Nev.; sons, Lee Burdette of Seattle, Wash., Kent Burdette of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Cris Allmond of Wichita, Philip Catalano of Oklahoma City, Nick and Daniel Kingman of Victorville, Okla., Eric Burdette of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alex Burdette of Seattle, Wash., Steven Burdette of Oklahoma City, Diego Gomez of Camden, Del.;
great-grandchildren, Hunter and Kiley Catalano of Oklahoma City; Austin and Bethany Allmond of Wichita; sisters, Phyllis Brant and Annie Mooney of Lakewood, Colo., Nina Greenfield of Yuma, Colo. A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Resthaven Mortuary.

Aaron Benonie Gaines was born March 6, 1876, at Tazewell County, Illinois. He was the son of Moses and Sarah Blankenship Gaines, who moved their family by covered wagon to Kansas in 1879 and settled near Bow Creek southwest of Kirwin.
On July 25, 1897, he married Martha Inman, daughter of Stephen and Elisabeth (King) Inman and granddaughter of John King. She was born January 6, 1871, in Manto County, Ohio.
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Gaines spent most of their lives in the Kirwin area, having set up housekeeping in a sod house four miles northwest of Kirwin on land Martha had homesteaded before their marriage. In 1907 the familiy moved by covered wagon sixteen miles northeast of Burlington, Colorado. Later they moved to Nebraska and to Waldron, Arkansas, returning to the Kirwin area in 1914. Mr. and Mrs. Gaines became members of the Church of God in 1909 and remained faithful members.
Mrs. Gaines died August 9, 1937, at Gretna, Kansas. Aaron died June 18, 1939, at Gretna. Both are buried at Kirwin.
Their children are:
Viola was born in 1898 at Kirwin. She married Brentz Gilder in 1917 in Phillipsburg. She died in 1930 in Colorado.
Arizona, born in 1899, Kirwin, married Nelson Stevens, son of Clarence and Sarah Stevens, in 1918.
Herbert, born in 1901, Kirwin, died in 1961 in Missouri. His wife was Marie Stroup, daughter of Charles and Ida Stroup. His marriage took place in 1921 at Athol, Kansas.
Faye, born in 1905, lived in Kirwin. In 1922 at Phillipsburg, she married George Stroup, son of Charles and Ida Stroup.
Mary, born in 1908, in Colorado, became Mrs. James Smith in 1923, at Phillipsburg. She died in 1938 in Oklahoma.
Rhoda was born in 1910 in Nebraska. She married Leo Winfrey in 1928 at Phillipsburg.

Fern was born in 1913 in Arkansas. In 1934 in Phillipsburg she married Arthur Ellis, son of Cordian and Maggie Miers Ellis. She died in 1974 in Colorado. Information from Faye L. Stroup


Martha Mahala Inman, daughter of Steven and Elizabeth Inman was born in Monroe, Ohio on January 6, 1871 and died on August 9, 1937 at the age of 66 years, 7 months, 3 days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fern Ellis near Gretna, Kansas. She has been in failing health for the past 9 years and has been bed-fast for the past 6 months.
She came from Ohio to Kansas at the age of 16 years. She was married to Henry Brewer in 1889, to this union one son and one daughter were born. She made her home around Kirwin, Kansas, and on July 26, 1897 she was united in marriage to Aaron Gaines, to this union 6 daughters and 2 sons were born. One son, Oliver James, preceded her in death in 1905 and a daughter, Viola E. Gilder, in 1930. She was converted and united with the Church of God in 1910, and was a active member as long as her health permitted.
Those that mourn her going are her husband, Aaron Gaines; and Crawford Brewer of Speed, Kansas, Pearl Kreoger of Burlington, Colorado, Arizona Stevens of Gretna, Kansas, Herbert Gaines of Salida, Colorado, Faye Stroup of Kirwin, Kansas, Mary Smith, Ringwood, Oklahoma, Rhoda Winfrey of Bosworth, Missouri, Fern Ellis of Gretna, Kansas.
