1914 Chanute Kansas "J. W. Paughman has received a clipping from a Seattle, Wash., newspaper, giving an account of vho accident which resulted fatally to his son, John W. Baughman, last week. The article says: His body hurled through the air into dense brush 200 feet distant, John Baughman met instant death at S o'clock at night when a blast of dynamite which he was using to remove stumps exploded unexpectedly.
David Follette, who was working with Mr. Baughman, suffered a fractured arm. possible internal injuries, the loss of one eye and severe bruises, which may end fatally, from the same explosion. Botn lived near the scene of the accident. Early In the evening Mr. Baughman and his wife went to to the Follette home and Mrs. Follette accompanied the others to where the stumps were to be removed. Blasts were placed under six stumps. Five of the blasts exploded, the sixth, for some reason, not going off at the same time. "I'll go see what is holding that blast back," Baughman said to Follette. He approached the stump. The wives remained at a safe distance. When within a few feet of the stump a deafening explosion took place. Baughman's body was hurled 20 0 feet and Follette was thrown into the brush fifty feet away. Mrs. Baughman became hysterical and her screams attracted the neighbors. Within a short time several hundred residents of the district were searching for Baughman's body."
