THE HEBREW FAMILY

Our immigrant Alexander Hebrew (1777-1877) came to America in 1832 from County Tyrone, Ireland.

Alexander brought his three children: Samuel James Hebrew (1821-1895); James Adams Hebrew (1818-1899); and Mary Jane Hebrew Long (died 1848).

They lived in Philadelphia for seven years and then migrated to Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio.

Samuel James Hebrew married Jane McPherson in 1852 and soon after they moved to Albia, Monroe County, Iowa

where Samuel Hebrew Jr. was born in 1858. In 1873 the Hebrew family including Alexander Hebrew migrated to Bow Creek, Phillips County, Kansas.

Samuel Hebrew Jr. rode on several cattle drives to Denver, Colorado in the early 1880's.  He also hauled sand and gravel for the old Denver Court House and for the capitol building and then went to work for the Harrimon Ranch.  He then started working for the Denver Union Water Company later known as the City and County of Denver Water Department and continued working for them for forty six years.

Samuel Hebrew Jr. was a charter member of the Woodman of the World lodge at Mt. Morrison and a member of the Methodist Church.

Samuel Hebrew Jr. was a deputy sheriff for Jefferson County from 1911 to 1917 and served on the Mt. Morrison town board.

On September 26, 1897 Samuel married Nora Smith of Indian Hills, Jefferson County, Colorado, (1876-1947) daughter of Jeremiah and Margaret Healey Smith.

Samuel and Nora Hebrew ran the Gateway Livery Stables and rented burros to tourist to ride into the Red Rocks.  Tourists would ride the Colorado and Southern railroad from Denver to Morrison, then mount the sure footed donkeys and ride into the 'Garden of the Red Rocks' for a picnic and to ride on the funicular, an incline tramway, to the top of Mount Morrison. 

Samuel and Nora Hebrew had two daughters: 

    Bertha Marie Hebrew(1898-1985) who married Curt LaGrow and then Fred Stickler. 

    Bonnie Lenora Hebrew (1901-1981) married Victor Swanson and then Samuel W. Guinn.

Samuel Hebrew died August 28, 1932 during an operation for throat cancer.

Nora Hebrew died December 11, 1947.

All are buried at Morrison Cemetery, Morrison, Jefferson County, Colorado.
