High School Graduates, 1898 - 1940
These names were obtained from past Lake City teachers’ class
registers. A student listed as a 12th Grade student in the fall of
any particular year may not, in fact, have received a diploma in
May/June of the next year. In a few instances, names appeared
in the fall as 12th Graders but do not reappear the following spring
on the roster, indicating the students, 1) may have moved away
from the area; or, 2), dropped out of school; or, 3) received their
diploma at mid-year.
Lists of actual graduates from year to
year haven’t been located, if such lists exist. This is an attempt
to assemble a list of the names of students who actually graduated
from Lake City High School and is a “good guess” at best.
Additions and/or deletions to the list are WELCOME, as are
suggestions of what other references might exist that would helpful
with this endeavor. Respectfully submitted, Parry Heath,
Summer, 2002
Prior to the 1997-98 school year, no one is enrolled at higher than
the 9th Grade level. Either registers for the 10th, 11th, and 12th
grades are missing, or curriculum higher than 9th Grade was not
offered.
1898 - seven students are listed as 10th Graders;
two boys (both 18 years old), and five girls (ages 15 and 16). There
are no students designated as 11th or 12th Grade students.
The first 10th Grade commencement for Lake City High School
graduates was held in May, 1898, with graduates Burnie Paterson,
Lula Lawler, Mary Lawler, Edith Bent, Alice Donnell, Sadie Isaacs,
and Ray Madison.
1899 - only one school register was found,
identifying all students as either 3rd or 4th Graders.
1900 -
only one register was located and it includes students at all
levels, primary through 9th Grade (and there was only one 9th
Grader).
In the registers for the school year 1900-1901, H.G.
Heath’s name first appears as a teacher. And it is with this school
year, ending in 1901, that the names of any 12th Grade students
first appear.
