Harriet Elizabeth "Pilliod" Slagowski

Harriet E. Slagowski, a long time resident of Rifle, CO, died
December 3, 2010, in Denver, CO, at the age of 93. She was
born
September 19, 1917 in Grand Rapids, OH, to Leo and Frances Pilliod,
Harriet graduated from the University
of Toledo in 1938. She began
her teaching career at Hillyard Flat, WY, where she met and married her
husband, Viven Slagowski.
She taught in Olathe, Estes Park, and
Rifle for a total of 28 years, retiring in 1978. She was named Retired
Teacher of the Year in 1997.
After retiring, Harriet was the Roving
Reporter for the Rifle Telegram, and remained active in many civic
organizations, including the Garfield County Fair Board, Garfield County
Library Board Democratic Party, Rifle Hospital Auxiliary, and the
Elkettes.
In earlier years, she was active in Jane Jefferson Club,
University Women, American Legion Auxiliary, and Beta Sigma Phi.
She
enjoyed many years with the Rifle Reading Club. She enjoyed her
Tennessee Walking Horses, traveling
and collecting antiques. She
resided at the Argyle in Denver from 2008 - 2010. Harriet was preceded
in death by her
husband, Viven Slagowski, and her son, Richard
Slagowski of Billings, MT. She is survived by her two daughters.
Vicki Noell of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Frances May (Philip), of Aurora,
CO; a daughter-in-law, Alice Slagowski
of Billings, MT; seven
grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
There will be a Mass at
St. Mary's Church in Rifle on December 9, 2010 at 10:00 a.m, followed by
burial at Rose Hill
Cemetery in Rifle. Reception to follow at St.
Mary's Church hall. Memorial donations may be made to Rifle Lift Up
or Rifle Library Board.
