Joe Romero (1885-1937)
Lot 500 / Plot 8
Died Oct. 31, 1937 -
Silt, CO
There is no more information listed for Joe Romero in the
records concerning his family, where he was born or where he might have
grew up. Sadly I found through researching old newspaper records how he
passed. Joe was working at a dance hall in Silt on the night of Oct. 31,
1937. Ted Espinoza of Grand Junction and his two brothers, Manuel and
Lloyd were in Silt attending, as described by the Grand Junction Daily
Sentinel, a Mexican dance party. During the course of the evening the
three brothers got into a fight with Romero. Romero was struck in the
head by a rock thrown by Ted Espinoza. Romero would die from the blow.
The three were charged with murder with the charges later reduced to man
slaughter, Ted was sentenced to a term of 15-18 years while his brothers
were sentenced to 7-8 years.
