Claude Orlando Hill
June 30, 1893 - January 20, 1983
Claude
Hill, a former resident of Grand Junction, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 1983,
at the La Villa Grande Care Center after a brief illness. He was 89.
Claude was born June 30, 1893, at Arrel, Mo., where he spent his
childhood and attended schools.
Claude was married to Emma Sellars
November 25, 1914, in Missouri. They had six children in 16 years. She
passed away in 1933.
He was married to Effie Plunk Conner April 22,
1942, at Littleton. She passed away November 18, 1988 at Grand Junction
of a heart attack. She was 79.
Effie grew up in Oklahoma and had
first married Thomas Henry Conner April 20, 1930. She moved to the
Eastern Slope in 1942 and married Claude that same year.
Claude and
Effie moved to Glenwood in 1946 and later to Rifle, where they bought
and operated the C.V. Bar Guest Ranch. Later they had a fruit farm in
Grand Junction.
In 1951, they bought Trapper's Lake Resort, which
they ran until 1955. Claude's obituary says he was a resident of Rifle
from 1955. And that he was a retired cattle rancher.
Effie and Claude
loved to play cards. She cooked for the summer camp at Big Pine, and she
could cook. She enjoyed quilting, reading and raising flowers. Claude
enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving him, in addition to his wife,
are five daughters, Mrs. Scott (Lula Mae) Richardson, Simla; Lelia
McCougal, Denver; Mrs. Kenneth (Jewell) Heckman,
Westminster;
Mrs._John (Claudine) Waschak, Lafayette; and Mrs. Oscar (Connie) Vann,
Grand Junction; two sons, Dean Hill, Laramie, Wyo., and Daun Hill,
New Castle; one sister, Gertie Davenport, Kent City, Mo.; 24
grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Claude and Effie are buried at Rose Hill.
