Katherine Slaymaker Herwick was born January 15, 1898 at Douglas Wyoming
and attended schools there.
Oren Hilton Herwick was born November 12,
1889 at State Bridge, Eagle County, one of 13 children.
Oren's feet
were crippled, he said they were run over by a wagon wheel when he was
young.
Katherine and Oren were married at Douglas June 10, 1919. They
had one son, Norman, and three daughters, Orian, Zelda, and Carol.
Oren served in the Colorado National Guard during WWI, enlisting August
22, 1918. He worked in construction at an ammunition plant in West
Virginia, and was discharged January 24, 1921 in Rifle. During the later
part of his service time, he was building houses in Wyoming. Would have
met Katherine then.
They lived in the Grand Valley area from 1919 to
1960, but with Oren passing in 1952. After 1960, Katherine then lived in
the Grand Junction area.
The Herwicks ranched on Battlement Mesa, and
Oren also engaged in mining, carpentry, and contracting.
Katherine
was a member of the Episcopal Church and was a 50 year member of the
Rebekah Lodge, of which she had served as noble grand.
Oren passed
away November 1952 in Grand Valley. Katherine passed away May 11, 1975
in Grand Junction. They are both buried in the Battlement Mesa Cemetery.
