Helen "Berniece"
Hammerich of 748 Buckeye Court, Rifle, died Sunday February 10, 1991, at
Clagett Memorial Hospital in Rifle. She was 63.
Berniece was born
June 4, 1927, in Glenwood Springs to Clay Nelson and Helen Iona Duffy
Walck. She grew up there and graduated from Garfield County High School
in 1945.
She married William Claus Hammerich Jr Sept. 4, 1945, in
Glenwood Springs. William was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Glenwood and he
spent his childhood there. He graduated from Garfield County High School
in 1940. He enlisted in the Army March 2, 1945, then was discharged
November 13, 1946.
William died August 28, 1985, at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center after a long illness. He was a cattle
rancher and a 22-year resident of Rifle.
In 1949, Berniece and
William moved to Wallace Creek near Grand Valley, now Parachute, where
they were engaged in farming until moving to Rifle in 1963.
Mrs.
Hammerich was a clerk for the Ben-Rex Drug Store in Rifle for 17 years.
She was a member of Jewel Chapter No. 77, Order of the Eastern Star, and
had served as a worthy matron. She was a member of the Delila No. 71
Rebekah Lodge in Parachute, and had served as it's noble grande.
Mr .
Hammerich's interests were horses and ranching. He was a member of the
National Reining Horse Association, secretary for the Battlement Mesa
Cattlemen's Association for 10 years, and a leader in the 4-H Horse and
cattle clubs of Rifle. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors at the
time of Berniece's passing included her mother of Grand Junction; three
sons and two daughters-in-law, William C. and Sabrina Hammerich of
Greeley, Warren and Gail Hammerich of Loveland, and John Hammerich of
Rifle; two daughters, Karen Groves of Grand Junction, and Sharon
Hammerich of Rifle; a brother and sister-in-law, Doug
and Ethel Walck
of Grand Junction; and three grandchildren.
Memorial contributions
were suggested to be made to Jewel Chapter No. 77, 0rder of the Eastern
Star, 800 Whiteriver Avenue, Rifle, Colorado 81650, or to the charity of
one's choice.
Sowder Funeral Home in Rifle was in charge of
arrangements
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Thursday February
14, 1991, at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in Rifle with Jim
Seaney officiating, Order
of the Eastern star memorial rites
were
performed. Cremation preceded the service.
