Hardy Fuller

Hardy and Stena Fuller

I've been reading about all these colorful characters in New Castle and wanted to add a story about a horse thief from our family. Hardy Fuller was a half-brother to John Samuel Fuller who lived in New Castle. Hardy was born in Iowa in 1869. He married a woman named Stena Marie Fugal in 1899, in New Castle. In 1903 Hardy was arrested for stealing horses in Garfield county. While he was in custody and awaiting transport to Glenwood Springs, he tried to escape. He was re-captured and taken to the county jail in Glenwood Springs. He was tried and convicted and sentenced to two to three years in the penitentiary in Canyon City. I found him listed in the index as "Fuller, Hardy, Number 7323". After he was sent to prison, there was an article in the New Castle Nonpareil that said, "Mrs. Hardy Fuller has been given a divorce". I found another item in the same paper, dated September 5, 1905. It stated, "Hardy Fuller returned to New Castle Wednesday". by Marilyn Cozza
