Janey emigrated to the U.S. in 1907 with her
mother and brothers by crossing the ocean on the Cunard Lines passenger
ship where they arrived at Ellis Island. Once in the U.S. the family
traveled to Michigan to meet up with her father who had emigrated
earlier and had found work in a Copper Mine. In 1911 the family moved to
Garfield Creek to take over Janey's great uncle Andrew Dow's homestead
as Andrew had decided to move into Glenwood Springs. Janey grew up on
Garfield Creek and attended the lower Garfield Creek school house. In
1921 she married Elzie Rippy and the two of them acquired their own
homestead on Garfield Creek not far from her parent's place. Here they
built a home and raised cattle. Over the next several years they
acquired several other ranches totaling 1,000 acres. Three of her four
children were born at the homestead. In 1936 they sold the ranch and
bought a home in New Castle located at 296 E. Main Street where they
would live most of their remaning years. Janey was an extraordinary
woman of faith and very involved with the 4-Square Church in New Castle.
She was instrumental in the building of the log church building on Main
street in the 1940's. For many years she taught the summer vacation
bible school at the church where she would take photos of the students
through most of those years to remember the children. She also became
fluent in Spanish and would assist the teachers of the Spanish classes
at the New Castle School.
