Helen Herd & Archibald Bowman
Helen "Nell" Herd 1876-1948
Nell
was the 14th of 15 children of parents: Stewart Herd & Elizabeth Bain.
Born in Auchterederran, Scotland, Nell emigrated to the U.S. in 1908,
and settled in to Pennsylvania.
Archibald "Arch" Bowman 1887-1973
Arch was the last of ten children of parents: Alexander Bowman &
Elizabeth Crawford. Arch, and his siblings, was born in Scotland. He
emigrated to the U.S. and settled in to Pennsylvania.
Nell met and
married Arch in 1914. They had one daughter from this union: Elizabeth
"Betty" Bowman. The Bowman family began life in Pennsylvania, moved to
Colorado, and eventually made their way to California. On many occasions
the Bowman family would often visit their Herd relations living in and
around New Castle, Colorado.
In 1948, at 72 years old, Nell had
passed away. Preceded in death by her parents, nine of her siblings, and
many cousins; Nell was interred in to Highland Cemetery.
In 1973, at
85 years old, Arch had passed away. Preceded in death by his parents,
all of his siblings, and many cousins; Arch was interred in to Highland
Cemetery.
It is not known why Arch and Nell chose to be buried at
Highland Cemetery - considering that they never lived in New Castle.
But, perhaps, Nell felt a strong familial bond to join her brother
William Herd and sister Elizabeth Herd Smith. And I presume the obvious
decision for Arch, 25 years later, would be to lay beside Nell for
eternity.
