Used to be The Outwest Bar
Arlo A. Woolley grew up and went to schools in Tridell, Utah, a small
town of less than 500 located 20 miles west of Vernal.
He worked as
a sheepman for several years in the Vernal area, and he then worked in
the oil fields in Rangely. He passed away February 24, 1973 in Colorado,
probably Rifle.
Stella Veona McCurdy was also from a large family
being one of 11 children of the McCurdys. She passed away September 3,
2014 in Pasco, Washington. She lived an astounding 41 years after Arlo
passed away. She, had just turned 52.
An Ancestry report says Arlo
first married Mabel Darling and it said they had one daughter.
Arlo
and Stella were married July 17, 1939 in Vernal, Utah. They had two
sons, Leon and Arthur. And they had three daughters, Gwen, Connie, and
Arloa.
(Leon was a classmate of the author. And he married another
classmate, Jennifer Mallett)
Arlo was a member of the LDS Church.
After a long illness with cancer, he passed away in 1973 at age 58.
In 1961, they had an address in Grand Junction. In 1962, they moved to
Rifle and bought the Outwest Cafe and Bar. It was located across from
the newer Union Carbide plant.
In March 1962, the Motel part of the
Outwest had burned. At that time, it was still owned by Cecil Hittle.
Arlo and Stella operated the Outwest together then Stella continued,
altogether over 30 years. Her obituary called it notorious.
City
directories show Stella living in Rifle as late as 2002.
They
enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting, and fishing. Stella loved her
4-wheeler and her wave runner.
Stella moved to Pasco, Washington to
live with her daughter Gwen, and passed away there at age 93.
She and
Arlo are buried in the Rock Point Cemetary at Maeser, Utah, a suburb 5
miles west of Vernal.
