1988
Mrs. Grace Neil, who was a resident of the E. Dene Moore
Memorial Home in Rifle, died there Saturday, January 9, 1988. She was
94.
Grace was a homemaker, a rancher, a teacher, and had taught
school in the Burns area rural schools, and at Hot Sulphur Springs.
She was born January 31, 1893, at Ridgeway, Missouri, to Ralph and Belle
Sellers McGlochlin.
At the age of 5, she moved with her family to
Wolcott. In 1899. they moved to a homestead 10 miles north of Wolcott.
Her mother Belle died in January 1905.
Grace attended schools at
Gypsum, and Wolcott, and for a short time in Greeley, where she obtained
her teaching certificate.
She married Clark Lemley Gates January 31,
1914, at Wolcott. She likely met him in Wolcott as he had to trail drive
his cattle there from Burns to load them on the railroad.
Clark was
born September 6, 1877, in Hebron, Nebraska. He passed away December 29,
1934, while engaged in feeding his cattle at his ranch home at Burns.
Clark lived with his parents in Nebraska until nine years of age. In1886
they moved to Denver and remained there for a few years.
The family
then moved to Rock Creek in Routt County where Clark helped his folks
manage a tourist resort.
In 1898 at age 21, Clark located a
homestead on Derby Mesa, near Burns where he resided until his death in
1934.
Grace and Clark had two daughters, Eva Marie and Martha
Elizabeth.
Martha was born November 20, 1914, in Burns, and passed
away February 26, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Eva was born March 4,
1917, also in Burns, and passed away November 21, 2006, in Carbondale.
Eva's father died in 1934 when she was only 17 and still in high school.
Eva graduated from Eagle County High School in 1933, then attended
college in Arizona. She married Glenn Lynn Zastrow on June 20, 1935, at
Burns.
In 1939, they moved to the Rifle area first living in Silt.
They still lived in Silt in 1945 when the twins Roger and Ronald were
born. Then, the 1950 census shows them at 200 East 2nd St. in Rifle.
Glenn was born February 13, 1909, in Canyon City, then grew up in Las
Cruces, New Mexico. He moved from Las Cruces to the Rifle area per his
obituary. There were Zastrows in Burns, have not established the exact
connection.
Eva and Glenn raised three sons, Clark Zastrow (Jun 21,
1936 - May 1, 2013), Roger Zastrow (Apr 8, 1945 - Sep 30, 2023), and Dr.
Ronald Zastrow who was Rogers twin.
(Roger and Ronald were my
classmates at Rifle.)
Grace & Clark lived in Burns and ranched on
Derby Mesa where Clark was part of the large pioneer Gates family that
built the Derby Ditch.
After Clark passed away on December 29, 1934,
Grace continued to operate the ranch with the aid of hired help.
She
married Charles Fremont Neil January 20, 1940, at Moab, Utah, and they
continued to ranch in Burns until their retirement in 1947.
In 1971,
after 56 years in Burns, the couple moved to Grand Junction.
