About Jerome "the Dutchman" Markle

Letter to W. S. Reynolds on Feb 20, 1904 regarding Jerome "the Dutchman" Markle,
one of the most dangerous safe burglars.

In the following please find criminal history and record of Jerome Markle alias Webber, alias "the Dutchman."  Markle is one of the most dangerous safe burglars in the U. S., especially so on account of his familiarity with the manufacture of safes at which he is a fine mechanic.

His home is in Canton, Ohio where is mother resides. He was married in 1885 and went to New Orleans. Employed at Diebold Safe Works (in Canton) he was an expert in opening safes. 

About 15 to 18 years ago Markle was arrested in Dayton, Ohio.  Taken to Lebanon, Ohio for safe blowing.  He served 2 terms in the Columbus, Ohio penitentiary. 

One term of 3 years from Richland County, Ohio and a term of 5 years from Tuscarwaras County, Ohio.

Arrested October 4, 1895, Sioux City, Iowa for safe blowing and burning the depot at Moville, Iowa. He probed an alibi and was discharged. Rearrested by Sheriff Thom of Worthington, MN.  Arrested by Postmaster Inspector Fosnes for robbing the Madison, SD post office.

Authorities suspect him of burglarizing the bank in McLouth, KS.

Arrested November 5, 1896 in Colorado Springs, CO on suspicion.

Released November 13, 1896.

He left a complete set of burglar tools in his room at Colorado Springs.  They are said to be the finest kit of burglar tools to be found in this country.

Webber had other arrests after.  He is said to be well educated and educated for priesthood.
