Sam came to Central City, Colorado in the early 1860's perhaps as early as 1859. In 1864 he enlisted in the 100 day Regiment of the Colorado 3rd Cavalry which was involved in the famous "Sand Creek Massacre". Sam was wounded during this battle. On March 1, 1881, Sam was appointed by Gov. Pitkin to be one of the County Commissioners for the newly formed Colorado county of Dolores. Sam came to Rico in 1879.

At that time, her father sent her to live with her aunt Margaret in Durango as he felt Rico was a little too rough of a town for a young lady without a mother.
