The Sugar City Schoolhouse in Crowley County, Colorado,
built in 1914, was a significant red-brick building that served all 12 grades
until a separate high school was constructed nearby in the 1920s, later becoming
a grade school, and eventually saved from ruin by community efforts to become
the Heritage Center, a community center, town hall, and museum, notes the
Colorado Encyclopedia.
Construction & Early Years:
Founding: A local
group acquired land in May 1914 for $300, with construction starting in July of
the same year.
Cost & Design: The Renaissance Revival building cost around
$7,700, featuring ornate woodwork, slate blackboards, steam heat, and large
arched windows.
Opening: It opened in November 1914 with 44 students,
offering secondary education until a dedicated high school was built nearby in
1920.
