DELMAR

"Del Robb, 86, of Rancho Bernardo, passed away September 28, 2008. He possessed a sparkling sense of humor, was a friend to all, and will be remembered always in the hearts of his family.
Born in Flagler, Colorado, his family struggled through the Depression and the Dust Bowl. After college, Del moved to Washington, D.C., to work in the National Archives. But WWII was around the corner and he decided he wanted to contribute more to his country than being a neighborhood Warden, so he enlisted in the Army-Air Corps. He joined the Air Cadet program and was off to Texas. He received his Silver Wings, was kept as an air instructor, and spent almost the entire war years in Texas.
After the war, Del went back to work in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. At that time, many in our country felt the people were losing respect for the country and its leaders. It was decided that a "Freedom Train" would traverse the country, carrying our Nation's important documents such as the Declaration of Independence, to promote patriotism. Del was given the job to oversee the archived documents and traveled with the train for 18 months.
Following the train tour, he was asked by a private company to join them in the hope that a campaign could be formed to help children that were afflicted with cerebral palsy, so he left the National Archives to join the group. After a short time, most cities were taking up this work on their own and having their own fund drives. However, he stayed and served for many years on this founding board, and remained active in the organization in later years.
In 1960 he moved his family to Hawaii. Desiring once again to serve his country, he worked over 20 years as a civilian for the U.S. Navy in Pearl Harbor at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He retired in 1987. He loved his years in Hawaii and embraced the people and its customs. During the 1960's and 1970's, Del was active in the Aloha Festivals organization which celebrated Hawaiian culture and promoted tourism with special events throughout the year. In 1970 he was president of this organization and oversaw events on all six main islands.
Del and wife, Elizabeth, moved to San Diego in 1990 and made Rancho Bernardo their home for 18 years. Last October, they celebrated 64 years of marriage. Del's retirement years were spent golfing, traveling and working with NARFE, a government retirement group. His last few years were very difficult, but he always had a cheery word and a humorous story for everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; son, David, and his wife, Gloria; daughter, Anne Marie Robb; one grandson; and two great grandchildren. "
