DOUGLAS COUNTY SCHOOL CENSUS

The State of Colorado required school districts to submit a census of the school age children to the state each year. This census listed all of the school age children in the district, not only the children in school. The requirements for the census changed as the state dictated, but usually required everyone from age 6 to 21. The school districts were numbered in the order they were established, with the first district being Sedalia, with a school established prior to 1865. The schools were consolidated into one district in 1958.

The school census is a historical record of who was living in the district for a given year, the district boundaries changed as the school age population changed. Some schools ceased operation or were physically moved to follow the students.

These records are from the Colorado State Archives and were transcribed by Jan Herman. The records are transcribed in the format they were in, so the formats are not always the same.

As more records are transcribed they will be added.
